An observational search has been made for intensity fluctuations associated with the wave motions that are thought to heat the corona. Brightness changes in the coronal green line (Fe XIV lambda 5303) and the coronal continuum were measured with the University of Hawaii's polarimeter at Mt. Haleakala. Upper limits of fluctuations associated with wave heating were 0.2% and 6% in the line and continuum, respectively. Spectra of quiescent prominences have been analyzed to determine whether any...

The intense crack production that occurs in highly stressed rocks greatly increases the interconnectivity and the conductivity efficiencies of the cracks. Network models of this effect give reasonable estimates of the electrical properties. The surface conductivity contribution is still modest and limits the range of zeta potentials. Turbulence effects are shown to reduce the experimental determinations of these potentials. Extensions of the network models are made to treat the mechanical...

Results are reported of a second phase in the development of a mathematical theory of organization. Starting from certain assumptions regarding the characteristics of a typical organization member, the theory seeks to derive those of a well-functioning organization. This report deals more particularly with the interplay of the factors which favor, with the ones that militate against, decentralization. The subject is a generalization in several respects over one treated in a 1974 (AD A003 601)...

Part B of Experiment I is a follow-up conducted in an attempt to explain apparent male-female differences found in Part A, in which the visual evoked potential (VEP) of males was enhanced with induced muscle tension (IMT) but no consistent effect on VEPs of females was observed. This paper considers a population (composed, for example, of people, machines, or livestock) subject to a randomly occurring defect or disease. If there exist testing procedures capable of detecting the defect before it would otherwise become known, and if such early detection provides benefit, the periodic administration of such as test procedure to the members of the population, i.e., a mass screening program, may be advisable. An analytical model of a mass screening program is developed and...

Engines of all sorts, from steam engines to those used in nuclear power plants, require a knowledge of a) the precise location of phase transition lines, b) exactly what happens when a material (such as steam) is moved across a given phase transition line. This information is essential from the engineering point of view because only with this information can one hope to have a truly efficient engine design. Phase transitions have become an extremely active field of research because of this...

The study concludes that the demonstrative and discrete use of the armed forces for political objectives should not be an option which decision-makers turn to frequently, nor quickly, to secure political objectives abroad, except under very special circumstances.
